I am a caregiver to my husband of 33 years. In 2016 he suffered an acquired brain injury as a result of a car accident. Nearly everything about our “normal” lives changed in an instant. Through his recovery journey, I’ve been on a journey of my own–learning to love and support this “new fella” in my life. What a journey it has been! We both have received significant help from the support groups offered through Alamo Head Injury Association. There, I found other caregivers who “got me”. I so needed to be heard, understood and accepted in this new role.
Now, I have the privilege of serving as the President of AHIA’s Board of Directors. What an honor to be able to give back time and attention to this wonderful non-profit that was, and still is, here for me. Hoping to make an impact on expanding the reach and efficiency of this organization to help others who’ve gone through similar life-changing experiences.
